The Intern

Ben, played by Robert De Niro, is a 70-year-old retiree. He is employed as a senior intern of a fashion retailer where the 30-year-old Jules, played by Anne Hathaway, is the CEO. Jules is a passionate, highly competent leader. Ben and Jules have a rather tense start, largely due to Jules feeling uncomfortable about Ben who, despite his age, does secretarial chores for her. As time goes by, however, the mature Ben settles into his role with his trademark kindness and Jules finally opens up to him. From then on, whenever the young CEO is troubled, Ben supports her unreservedly, giving the right advice. As a result, Jules overcomes crises both at home and in the company.

The movie beautifully portrays the rapport and harmony between older and younger generations through the less experienced yet hard-working CEO and the senior intern who provides the wisdom she needs. Watching the two characters respect each other while maintaining flexible and tolerant mindsets, I found myself wanting to be like them. Exciting films full of thrills are good sometimes but movies such as The Intern, rich in laughs and little life lessons, are the better option at other times, aren’t they?
