Meeting the World in Korea: East Timor & Ethiopia in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do

In May, the World Activity Class introduced the cultures of East Timor and Ethiopia to children at the Happy House Community Child Center in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do. The classes were led by Da Costa Miguel Domingos from East Timor and Lina Mehasin Ahmed, Nuha Awol Ahmedin, and Dureti Ademe Gebresenbet from Ethiopia. Several dozen elementary school students attended the event.
During the East Timor class, the children learned the traditional music and dance of the country. The teacher’s nickname “Domi” also means “I love you” in the country’s language. The students were delighted to learn a song from Domi with many “domi”s in the lyrics. The teacher also played the guitar, adding to the fun.
During the Ethiopian class, the students made bracelets with beads of the colors of the country’s national flag. As they put green, yellow, and red beads together, they learned the colors symbolize fertile land, hope, and the blood and courage of people who sacrificed themselves for freedom and equality.
