Korean Culture Class Goes to Hwaseong

On May 26, the KF Volunteer Network (KFVN)’s Korean Culture Class toured around the historic site of Hwaseong in Suwon, the city dreamed, planned, and created by King Jeongjo, the reformist monarch of Joseon.
The class walked around Yungneung and Geolleung, the royal tombs of King Jeongjo and his queen, and his father, Crown Prince Sado, and his princess, before strolling along the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace and Fortress. The relationship between King Jeongjo and his father Crown Prince Sado has become legendary as part of one of the most dramatic stories involving the royal families in Korean history, well-known to the public through depictions in movies and television dramas. The class also experienced the traditional gukkung archery at Yeonmudae Post, the ground for practicing martial arts. The tour offered foreign participants a good opportunity to learn Korean history as the culture tour guide gave kind and elaborate explanations and the Korean classmates provided interpretation.
