On the evening of July 6, 2018, in partnership with Jamia Millia Islamia, the Korea Foundation hosted the 2018 Korean Studies Reception for Korean studies scholars at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, India.
The reception was organized on the occasion of the 2018 AAS-in-Asia Conference in New Delhi. The AAS-in-Asia conferences are annual meetings held in Asian countries by local host universities and the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), the largest scholarly association related to Asia. About 50 Korean studies scholars representing multiple generations of Koreanists in countries with active Korean studies programs and activities, including the United States, the United Kingdom, India and Japan, attended the reception to discuss the development of Korean studies in their region and exchange ideas on future directions for Korean studies.
The reception began with Korea Foundation Executive Vice-President Kang Young-pil’s opening remarks. He expressed his hope that the gathering would contribute to widening the scope of communication among Korean studies scholars from different parts of the world and promoting Korean studies in India. Professor Kim Do-young of Jamia Millia Islamia and Professor Todd Henry of the University of California, San Diego then spoke on the current status of Korean studies in India and research direction in Korean studies, respectively.
In addition to the reception, the Korea Foundation provided travel grants to scholars from various countries who presented outstanding papers at the 2018 AAS-in-Asia, as part of its efforts to promote the wide distribution of diverse research results in Korean studies abroad.
Held at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi from July 5 through 8, the 2018 AAS-in Asia featured a keynote speech and 166 Asia-related panels under the theme of “Asia in Motion: Geographies and Genealogies.” The event was attended by approximately 800 scholars from about 30 countries around the world.
