
On August 2, 2018, the Korea-U.S.-China Trilateral Dialogue was co-organized in Seoul by the Korea Foundation, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the China Association for International Friendly Contact (CAIFC) and the Sungkyun Institute of China Studies of Sungkyunkwan University.
Held at a time of drastic changes in the Northeast Asian order surrounding the Korean Peninsula, the Dialogue addressed the theme of “Korea-U.S.-China Cooperation in Building a Peace Regime on the Korean Peninsula” in its three sessions. Session 1 covered U.S.-China relations, changes in the Northeast Asian order and the Korean Peninsula; Session 2, changes in North Korea and the security structure on the Korean Peninsula; and Session 3, courses and methods for denuclearization and building a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. Distinguished scholars, former and incumbent high-ranking government officials and other experts in foreign affairs, security and international relations gathered to discuss ways to continue and develop cooperation among South Korea, the United States and China in achieving denuclearization and building a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
The Korean delegation was headed by Korea Foundation President Lee Sihyung. Chancellor Cho Byungjae of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy delivered congratulatory remarks and Professor Emeritus Moon Chung-in of Yonsei University made a keynote speech. A total of eight former and current high-ranking government officials and experts in inter-Korean issues participated as speakers and discussants. They included Kim Yeon-chul, President, Korea Institute for National Unification; Lee Hee-ok, Director, Sungkyun Institute of China Studies; Koh Yu-hwan, Director, Institute for North Korean Studies, Dongguk University; Lee Gee-dong, Vice President, Institute for National Security Strategy; Kim Joon-hyung, Professor, Handong Global University; Lee Geun, Professor, Seoul National University; and Jun Bong-geun, Professor, Korea National Diplomatic Academy.
Headed by CSIS China Chair Christopher Johnson, the U.S. delegation included Sue Mi Terry, Senior Fellow, CSIS; Amit Sharma, Professor, Georgetown University; and John Park, Director, Korea Working Group, Harvard University. The Chinese delegation was led by Advisor of the CAIFC Sun Xiaoyu, and included Wang Fan, Vice Director, China Foreign Affairs University; and Teng Jianqun, Director, Department of American Studies, China Institute of International Studies. The three countries’ leading experts in Korean and Northeast Asian issues participated in the Dialogue to engage in in-depth discussion on creative means of trilateral cooperation to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
