The Korea Foundation and Future Forest organized the 2018 Korea-China Green Corps program
in Xi’an, Inner Mongolia and Beijing, China from November 5–11, 2018.
Representing the two countries’ youths, 100 young Korean and Chinese people
participated in the program designed to prevent desertification through forestation
activities and promote mutual understanding through exchange activities.
China’s Kubuqi Desert, where the recent forestation activities took place, is a
major source of hwangsa or yellow dust. About 40 percent of yellow dust blown into Korea
is reported to originate in the Kubuqi. The desert has thus been targeted by numerous
Korean organizations, including the Korea Foundation and Future Forest with their latest
project. A total of 10.5 million trees have been planted in the Kubuqi as of this year,
reportedly covering between 1–5 percent of the desert’s total area.
After participating in Northeast Asian environmental protection activities through
forestation and trekking through the desert, the two countries’ youths moved to
Beijing to continue exchange activities aimed at deepening their friendship.
