On January 24, 2019, the Korea Foundation and the Critical Global Studies Institute at Sogang University co-hosted the opening ceremony of the “Unwelcome Neighbors” photo exhibition at the KF Gallery in Seoul.
The ceremony began with welcoming remarks by the KF’s Executive Vice President, Mr. Kim Sung-in, followed by congratulatory remarks by Prof. Lew Seok-jin, Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Sogang University, and Ms. Sam Harvey, Director of the British Council in Korea.
As part of the ceremony, a brief seminar was held to examine the implications for contemporary society of the portraits of Sinti and Romani (often referred to as ‘gypsies’), killed during the Holocaust.
The exhibition features photographs of the daily lives of Sinti and Roma in Dessau-Roßlau, Germany, between the 1930s and 1945. Taken by German photographer and ethnographer Hanns Weltzel, the photos provide visitors with an opportunity to reflect on the violent history of the 20th century and on “unwelcome neighbors” in contemporary society. The exhibition at the KF Gallery continues until Thursday, February 28, 2019.
