With support from the Korea Foundation, the International Reform Policy Symposium and Regional Workshop 2019 was held in Bali, Indonesia on March 14 and 15.
The symposium was organized under the theme “Public Administration Reform and National Development in Indonesia, Korea & Southeast Asia” and attended by representatives of Korea and eight ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar). Participants shared successful examples of public policy reform from their respective countries with other attendees.
For the symposium, each participant country selected, investigated and reported on two to four areas of interest selected from five suggested topics (performance-based budgeting, transparency & accountability in HR, e-Government and its impact on public administration and service delivery, integrity in public authorities, and local government reform). In response to Southeast Asian states’ interest in learning Korea’s development experience, Korea gave presentations on all five areas.
From the ASEAN side, the symposium was attended by approximately 500 scholars and high-ranking government officials at the ministerial and vice-ministerial level, including Dr. Drs. H. Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, the vice president of Indonesia. From the Korean side, government officials and scholars from relevant fields participated in the symposium, including Kyung Wook Hur, former vice minister of Economy and Finance; Jeong-taek Lim, director-general for the International Administrative Cooperation of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety; Youngsun Koh, executive director of the Korea Development Institute’s Center for International Development; and Chang Yi, director of the Seoul Institute’s City Cooperation Center.
