서문

우리는 지금 서로의 얼굴을 어떻게 마주하고 있는가? 국제화가 가속화되는 오늘날의 세계는 그 어느 때보다 긴밀하게 연결되어 상호 영향을 미치고 있지만, 서로를 이해 하는 일은 여전히 쉽지 않다. 서로 다른 국가와 지역, 역사와 문화, 정치와 사회적 조 건 속에서 살아가는 사람들은 같은 세계를 공유하면서도 종종 서로를 낯선 타자로 경 험한다. 이러한 시대에 타인의 얼굴을 온전히 마주한다는 것은 단순히 바라보는 행위 를 넘어, 서로 다른 삶의 맥락과 문화적 배경을 이해하려는 윤리적 태도이며, 모두를 나와 같은 인간이자 존엄한 주체로 받아들이는 일이다.

한국국제교류재단(KF)이 2026년 3월 31일부터 7월 31일까지 선보이는 KF XR 기획전 《마주하는 얼굴들(Facing Faces)》은 이러한 문제의식에서 출발한다. 전시 는 다국적 기관들과의 협력을 바탕으로 각국이 공유해 온 보편적 가치의 지형을 조망 하며, 인권을 중심으로 자유와 평화 그리고 세계 시민으로서의 공존의 의미를 국제적 맥락 속에서 성찰해 보고자 한다.

한국어 전시 제목의 '마주하는'은 현재진행형으로서, 이해와 연대가 어느 시점 에 완성되는 것이 아니라 끊임없이 갱신되어야 하는 실천임을 강조한다. 영어 제목 'Facing Faces'에서의 'facing' 또한 단순히 바라본다는 의미를 넘어, 외면하지 않 고 책임 있게 직면하려는 태도를 함의한다. 이는 인권과 자유, 평화와 같은 보편적 가 치가 먼 이상에 머무는 것이 아니라, 우리가 끊임없이 마주하고 응답해야 할 동시대 의 문제임을 드러낸다. 한편 'faces'는 하나의 고정된 얼굴이 아니라, 개인이 지닌 다 층적인 정체성, 나아가 각 지역의 역사와 사회적 맥락 속에서 드러나는 서로 다른 삶 의 서사들을 가리킨다.

전시 제목이 품고 있는 인간 존중의 의미는 시간과 공간을 초월해 공유해야 할 보 편적 지향점인 동시에, 각 시대와 지역의 역사적 맥락 속에서 다양하게 해석되고 실 천되어 온 살아 있는 가치의 지형도이기도 하다. 전시는 이러한 관점을 바탕으로 다 양한 국가의 협력 기관들과 함께하며 각국이 추구해 온 보편적 가치들을 전달한다. 주한캐나다대사관은 가정 내 이주민 가사노동자의 인권 문제를 아동의 시선으로 성찰 하는 VR 작품으로 협력하고, 독한협회는 창립 60주년을 기념하여 베를린 장벽을 넘 어 자유를 향해 도약한 동독 경비원의 역사적 사진에서 출발한 VR 설치 작품을 선보 인다. 미국 하와이 소재 비영리기관 나우 프로덕션은 주호놀룰루 대한민국 총영사관, 하와이대학교 마노아 캠퍼스, 뉴욕주립대 폴리테크닉 인스티튜트와 협력하여 하와이 이주 한인 1세대 디아스포라의 유산을 담은 영화와 VR 작품을 통해 낯선 땅에서 정 체성과 존엄을 지켜온 이들의 서사를 입체적으로 조명한다. 이처럼 세 기관이 각기 다른 역사적 조건과 지정학적 맥락 속에서 포착한 '얼굴들'은, 인권이라는 보편적 가 •치가 다양한 방식으로 살아 있는 현실임을 드러낸다.

이러한 논의는 오늘날 디지털 공간으로도 이어진다. 한국은 2019년 제41차 유엔 인권이사회(UN Human Rights Council)에서 디지털 기술 전반과 인권의 관계 를 국제 사회 차원에서 처음으로 다룬 결의안 「신기술과 인권(New and Emerging Digital Technologies and Human Rights)」을 주도한 바 있다. 본 전시는 그 맥 을 이어, 인권의 개념을 물리적 공간을 넘어 디지털 공간으로 확장하여 고찰한다. 김 아영, 민세희, 디폴트(팀), 전소정, 정연두의 작품은 급변하는 신기술 환경 속 국제 인권과 디지털 권리 그리고 세계 시민적 공존의 의미를 탐구하며 오늘날 인류가 직면 한 동시대적 질문을 새로운 감각적 경험으로 제시한다. 관련 작품 대여를 위해 서울 시립미술관이, 창제작 작품 제작 자문을 위해 국제평화재단이 협력한다.

얼굴을 마주하고 그 이야기에 귀 기울인다는 것은, 타인을 대상이 아니라 동등한 주체로 인식하며 서로 다른 존재들이 세계 시민으로서 하나의 지구 안에서 함께 살아 가고 있음을 받아들이는 실천적 태도이다. 《마주하는 얼굴들(Facing Faces)》은 바 로 그 지점에서 출발하여, 디지털 기술을 매개로 인류 보편적 가치의 국제적 지형을 공감각적으로 펼쳐내고자 한다. 전시가 마련하는 이 국제교류의 장이, 관람객 저마다 에게 '공존의 세계'를 향한 상상과 성찰의 자리가 되기를 희망한다.

Preface

In what ways do we face each other today? Amidst an era of rapid globalization, societies are more intricately connected and exert greater influence on one another than ever before. And yet, understanding each other remains a challenge. Living in different countries and regions with varied histories and cultures while under diverse political and social conditions, people share the same world but often experience others as strangers. In such an age, to fully come face to face with another person involves more than the simple act of meeting and looking; it is an ethical deed to understand the context and cultural background of different lives and to accept every individual as an equal human being and a subject with dignity.

This viewpoint lies at the root of the special exhibition Facing Faces, presented by the Korea Foundation from March 31 to July 31, 2026. With the collaboration of multinational institutions, the exhibition strives to highlight the common values shared by different countries, exploring freedom and peace centered on human rights and the meaning of coexistence as global citizens in an international context.

In the Korean title, the verb majuhaneun ("facing") is set in the present continuous, emphasizing that understanding and solidarity are not fully realized at a particular moment but are practices that must be continually renewed. "Facing" in the English title also embodies more than simply looking, or even looking away, and instead points to confronting each other with a sense of responsibility. This implies that universal values such as human rights, freedom, and peace are not distant ideals, but instead stand as issues of our present day that we must face and address continuously. "Faces" are not fixed but symbolize the multiple identities of an individual and, going further, the narratives of individual lives found within the historical and social contexts of each region.

The significance of human respect embodied by the exhibition title is both a universal goal transcending time and space as well as a map of values that have been interpreted and practiced in diverse ways within the historical contexts of each era and region. With this viewpoint in mind, the exhibition collaborates with partner institutions around the globe and shares the universal values pursued by each country. The Embassy of Canada to the Republic of Korea brings a virtual reality (VR) work that explores human rights issues concerning migrant domestic workers from a child's perspective, while the German-Korean Society, in commemoration of its 60th anniversary, presents a VR installation inspired by a historic photograph of an East German security guard jumping over the Berlin Wall toward freedom. NOW Production Films, a nonprofit organization based in Hawai'i, in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Honolulu, the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, and SUNY Polytechnic Institute, presents a film and VR work investigating the first generation of the Korean diaspora in Hawai'i, bringing to life the narratives of those who fiercely protected their identity and dignity in a foreign land. The "faces" captured by these three different institutions within varied historical backgrounds and geopolitical contexts testify to the multifaceted reality in which the universal value of human rights exists.

Today, this discourse also extends to digital spaces. In 2019, at the 41st session of the UN Human Rights Council, Korea led the adoption of a resolution on New and Emerging Digital Technologies and Human Rights, addressing for the first time the overall relationship between digital technology and human rights within the international community. Building on this context, the exhibition transports the concept of human rights beyond physical space into the digital realm. The works of Ayoung Kim, Sey Min, DEFAULT, Sojung Jun, and Yeondoo Jung explore the meaning of international human rights, digital rights, and global civic coexistence amid a rapidly changing technological landscape, revealing the questions humanity faces today through new sensory experiences. The Seoul Museum of Art cooperated on the loan of selected works, and the International Peace Foundation provided production consultation.

To face another and listen to their story is an act of recognizing others as equal subjects and accepting the fact that different individuals live together as global citizens on Earth. Facing Faces starts at precisely this point and seeks to share the international landscape of universal human values using digital technologies as its medium. It is our hope that the platform for international exchange created by this exhibition will offer each and every visitor a space for imagining and reflecting on a world of coexistence.
