서문

한국국제교류재단과 주한 프랑스 대사관 문화과가 공동 주최하는 《빛의 다리》는 한국과 프랑스가 외교 관계를 맺은 지 140년이 되는 해인 2026년을 맞이하여 한불 교류를 오늘의 시선으로 고찰하는 전시다. 전시는 140주년을 단순히 기념해야 할 연도로 다루지 않는다. 오히려 140년이라는 시간이 무엇을 남겼는지 되짚고 아직 자리를 얻지 못한 이야기들을 불러내어, 두 나라가 함께 그려낼 다음 장면을 여는 자리로 삼는다.

이를 위해 전시는 조약이나 선언의 언어 대신, 두 나라가 오래 주고받아 온 '빛'의 감각을 따라가고자 한다. 1886년 수교 이래 한국과 프랑스는 각자의 방식으로 빛을 예술과 기술의 언어로 다루어 왔다. 인상주의의 화폭은 빛 그 자체를 그려내며 새로운 시각을 열었고, 20세기 초부터 파리로 건너간 한국 미술가들에게도 깊은 인상을 남겼다. 뤼미에르 형제가 '움직이는 빛'으로 영화를 발명한 이후, 그 경이는 오늘날까지 한국의 시각 문화에 깊숙이 스몄다. 오가는 동안 반사되고 굴절된 빛은 출발지와 다르게 읽혔고, 서로를 저마다의 방식으로 읽어 낸 시선 속에서 전에 없던 것이 태어났다. 프랑스 미술을 접했던 한국의 근대 화가들이 새로운 형상을 창조했다면, 한국 미술이 오래 다뤄 온 여백과 획은 파리의 화단에 없던 감각을 들여놓았다. 뤼미에르에게서 출발한 영화의 빛 또한 오늘날 한국 영화를 통해 그 범위를 확장하며 프랑스의 스크린을 열광케 하고 있다. 두 문화는 이처럼 번역의 틈새에서 서로에게 없던 빛을 만들어 왔다.

동시대 미디어아트와 XR의 세계도 그러하다. 픽셀은 하나의 빛점이고, 광섬유는 그 빛이 흐르는 통로이며, 디지털 아트가 짓는 몰입의 환경은 그 자체로 정교하게 설계된 빛의 세계다. 인상주의가 붙든 빛과 영화가 움직이게 한 빛, 그리고 오늘날 XR, VR, AI 기술이 짓는 빛의 환경은 별개의 역사가 아니라, 매체와 시대를 바꾸어 가며 이어져 온 하나의 흐름이다. 두 나라가 서로를 발견하고 스며 온 시간 역시 그 흐름을 따라 형태를 바꾸며 계속되었고, 오늘날 두 나라는 디지털 강국으로서 국제 무대에서 빛의 흐름을 선도하는 자리에 나란히 서 있다.

그리고 빛이 지나간 자리에는 언제나 하나의 선(線)이 남았다. 이번 전시가 함께하는 '디지털 노벰버(Digital November)'는 프랑스 해외문화진흥원(Institut Français)이 추진 및 지원하는 글로벌 디지털 창작 프로젝트이며, 2026년의 주제는 ‘Entre les lignes(행간 사이에서)'다. 프랑스어에서 '행간을 읽다(lire entre les lignes)'라는 뜻으로 쓰이는 이 표현은, 가시적인 것과 비가시적인 것, 말해진 것과 말해지지 않은 것 사이에 존재하는 경계와 틈을 탐색하도록 우리를 초대한다. 이는 양국 교류의 궤적, 그 사이의 이야기를 빛이 남긴 선들을 통해 읽어 보려는 본 전시의 의도와 자연스레 공명한다.

이번 전시는 KF가 한국 작가들의 작품을, 주한 프랑스 대사관 문화과가 공공외교적 관점을 담은 프랑스 측 작품들을 선정하여 함께 선보인다. 한국 작품들은 양국이 마주한 동시대의 질문들 곁에서 두 나라 사이를 오가는 몸과 목소리를 빛으로 따라가며, 교류를 지나온 역사가 아닌 현재진행형의 이야기로 바라본다. 프랑스 작품들은 회화와 문화유산, 도시와 자연, 인간과 비인간, 기억과 데이터를 가로지르며 서로 다른 매체와 시대를 거치며 진화해 온 빛의 궤적을 선보인다. 프랑스 측 작품의 경우 상당수가 프랑스 해외문화진흥원이 동시대 디지털 창작의 국제적 확산을 위해 운영하는 플랫폼 'IFdigital'과 'Le Catalogue XR'을 통해 선정되었다. 이로써 전시는 개별 작가의 작업을 넘어, 두 나라가 오늘의 기술로 세계와 나누고자 하는 상상력까지 마주하게 한다.

관객은 양국의 작가들이 빛으로 쌓아 올린 환경 속으로 걸어 들어가, 시간과 공간의 경계가 허물어지는 순간을 몸으로 경험할 수 있다. 140년의 문화 교류 속에서 창작자들의 빛이 남긴 선들은 한국과 프랑스를 잇고 두 문화 사이에 새로운 통로를 여는 그 자체로 하나의 가교다. 《빛의 다리>라는 전시의 제목은 여기에서 비롯되었다. 이 다리는 완성되어 놓인 것이 아니라 지금도 확장되고 있으며, 관객 또한 거기에 참여하며 저마다의 선을 하나씩 더한다. 그러므로 이 전시가 보여주려는 것은 매듭지어진 역사가 아니라, 지난 140년이 만들어 낸 연결과 만남, 그리고 지금도 이어지고 있는 대화의 현재형이다. 과거와 미래, 여기와 저기, 자연과 인공, 실재와 가상처럼 오래 나뉘어 온 것들이 다시 얽히는 이곳에서 전시는 묻는다. 두 나라가 함께 그어 온 빛의 선들은 어디로 향하고 있는가. 그 선들이 교차하며 만들어 내는 사이의 공간에서, 우리는 어떤 앞날을 함께 그려 나갈 것인가.

PREFACE

Cohosted by the Korea Foundation (KF) and the Cultural Service of the Embassy of France to the Republic of Korea, Bridge of Light is an exhibition that examines Korea-France exchange from a contemporary perspective in 2026, the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The exhibition does not treat this occasion merely as a year to be commemorated; instead, it looks back at what the past 140 years have left behind, brings to light stories that have yet to find their place, and creates a space within which to open the next chapter that these countries will write together.

To this end, rather than relying on the language of treaties or declarations, the exhibition seeks to follow the sense of "light" that Korea and France have shared and exchanged over an extended period of time. Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1886, these two nations have each approached light in their own ways through the languages of art and technology. Impressionist paintings opened up new ways of seeing and of depicting light itself, leaving a profound impression on Korean artists who traveled to Paris in the early 20th century. And as this light traveled back and forth, reflecting and refracting along the way, it came to be read differently from where it had originated, allowing something new to emerge from the ways in which each side viewed and interpreted the other. Modern Korean painters created new forms of expression after encountering French art, while yeobaek (empty or unfilled space) and brushstrokes long explored in Korean art introduced a sensibility that had not previously existed in the Parisian art scene. Meanwhile, the wonder of the "moving. light" that originated with the Lumière brothers' invention of cinema came to permeate Korean visual culture. Today, it continues to expand its reach through contemporary Korean cinema, which in turn captivates audiences in France. In this way, the two cultures have created new forms of light for one another within the gaps of translation.

The same is true of contemporary media art and the world of XR. A pixel is a single point of light; an optical fiber is the conduit through which that light flows; the immersive environments created by digital art are, in themselves, meticulously designed worlds of light. The light embraced by impressionism, the light set in motion through cinema, and the environments of light created today with XR, VR, and Al technologies are not separate histories; rather, they form a single continuum that has evolved across diverse media and eras. The period of time during which Korea and France have influenced one another has likewise continued to take on new forms along this continuum. Today, the two countries stand side by side on the international stage as digital powerhouses, leading the flow of light.

Wherever light passes, it leaves lines behind it. Digital November, in conjunction with which this exhibition is presented, is a global digital creation initiated and supported by the Institut Français. The theme for 2026, Entre les lignes (Between the Lines), is borrowed from the French expression meaning “to read between the lines” (lire entre les lignes). It invites us to explore the boundaries and spaces that exist between the visible and the invisible, the spoken and the unspoken. This naturally resonates with the intent of this exhibition, which seeks to trace the trajectory of exchanges between the two countries-and the stories contained within them-through the lines left behind by light.

Bridge of Light features works by Korean artists selected by the KF, alongside works by French artists selected by the Cultural Service of the Embassy of France to the Republic of Korea from a public diplomacy perspective. The Korean works trace, through light, the bodies and voices moving between the two countries alongside the contemporary questions they face, viewing exchange not as history confined to the past but as an ongoing story unfolding in the present. The French works traverse painting and cultural heritage, cities and nature, humans and nonhumans, and memory and data, to present the trajectory of light as it has evolved through different media and eras. Many of these works were selected through IFdigital and Le Catalogue XR, platforms operated by the Institut français to promote the international dissemination of contemporary digital creations from France. In this way, the exhibition goes beyond the work of individual artists to embody the imagination that the two countries seek to share with the world through today's technologies.

Visitors are welcomed to step into environments constructed with light by artists from both countries to physically experience moments in which the boundaries of time and space dissolve. The lines left

by the creators' light through 140 years of cultural exchange are, in themselves, a bridge connecting Korea and France, and opening new passages between the two cultures. The title of the exhibition arises

from this imagery; the Bridge of Light is not a structure fully completed and laid in place, but rather one that continues to expand even now, with audiences participating and adding their own lines to it, one by one. What the exhibition seeks to show, therefore, is not a history that has been brought to a close, but the connections and encounters created over the past 140 years and the present tense of a dialogue that continues to this day. In a space where things long divided-past and future, here and there, nature and the artificial, reality and the virtual- become intertwined once again, Bridge of Light asks: Where are the lines of light, which these two countries have drawn together, leading? And in the spaces between the lines and in the areas created where they intersect, what kind of future will we draw together?
