한국국제교류재단(KF)과 주한포르투갈대사관의 협력으로 개최되는 전시 《수출된 현실》은 포르투갈 현대미술을 대표하는 작가 4인이 글로벌 현상으로 자리 잡은 '한국 문화  (K-Culture)'를 타자의 시선에서 재해석한 작품들을 선보이는 뜻깊은 자리다.

최근 몇 년간 K-컬처는 부인할 ・없는 거대한 글로벌 트렌드로 자리매김했다. K-팝과 K-드라마부터 뷰티, 음식, 현대미술에 이르기까지, 동시대 가장 강력한 문화적 서사 중 하나를 구축해 내는 중이다. 중요한 점은 오늘의 K-컬처가 일방적으로 송출된 단방향의 결과물이 아니라는 것이다. 세계인이 이를 수용하고, 각자의 맥락에서 해석하며 애정을 덧입혀 온 다원적 현상이다. 본 전시는 한국을 있는 그대로 재현하는 대신, 포르투갈 등 해외에서 소비되고 재구성되는 '수출된 한국'의 다층적 이미지를 작가 고유의 조형 언어로 풀어낸다. 이는 한국 문화가 어떻게 인식되고, 여과되며, 재맥락화되는지를 살피는 의미 있는 '문화적 거울보기'의 일환으로 제시된다.

빌스는 오랜 시간 도시와 사회의 변화를 탐구하며 그 시각적 지층을 해체해 왔다. 실제 광고판을 지우고 절단하는 해체와 재구성의 과정을 통해, 그는 한국의 표면적 이미지 이면에 은폐된 보이지 않는 힘과 복잡한 역학관계를 드러낸다. 아나 말타는 K-컬처의 요소들이, 고정된 스테레오타입을 넘어 해외의 문화적 복합성과 상호작용하며 유동하는 방식에 주목하여 문화가 번역되는 과정을 특유의 리드미컬한 색채로 시각화한다. 아카코를레언은 <올드보이>, <기생충>, <아가씨> 등 한국 영화의 걸작들을 수채화적 화법으로 재구성하며, 특정 서사와 미학적 상징이 어떻게 국경을 넘어 전 지구적 인식을 형성하는지 자신만의 시각언어로 성찰한다. 웨이스티드 히타는 온라인과 밀착된 한국 대중문화가 디지털 매체를 타고 포르투갈과 유럽의 일상에 스며드는 양상을 포착하며, 그 소비 이면에 내재된 매혹과 거리감의 복합성을 날카롭게 짚어낸다.

네 작가의 다채로운 시선이 교차하는 본 전시는, 송출된 문화와 수용되는 문화 사이의 간극과 그 역동적인 상호작용을 가시화한다. K-컬처의 진정한 원동력은 일방적인 전파가 아니라, 외부의 능동적인 시선이 개입해 이를 기꺼이 해체하고 재해석하는 과정 그 자체에 있다. 수출된 현실》이 한국과 포르투갈 양국 간의 견고한 문화적 연대를 바탕으로, 이러한 문화의 역동적 가능성을 확인하는 진정한 쌍방향 국제교류의 장이 되기를 기대한다.

Preface

The exhibition Exported Reality, co-organized by the Korea Foundation (KF) and the Embassy of Portugal in Seoul, is a meaningful occasion that presents works by four leading figures of Portuguese contemporary art, who reinterpret Korean culture (“K-Culture”)—now firmly established as a global phenomenon through the gaze of the Other.

In recent years, K-Culture has taken its place as an undeniable, sweeping global trend. From K-Pop and K-Dramas to beauty, cuisine, and contemporary art, it is shaping one of the most powerful cultural narratives of our time. What deserves emphasis is that today's K-Culture is not the unilateral product of a one-way transmission. It is, rather, a pluralistic phenomenon that audiences across the world have embraced, interpreted within their own contexts, and enriched with their own affection. Rather than representing Korea as it is, this exhibition draws out-through each artist's distinctive visual language the multed images of an "exported Korea" as it is consumed and reconfigured in countries around the world, including Portugal. It is offered as part of a meaningful "cultural mirror-gazing" that examines how Korean culture is perceived, filtered, and recontextualized.

Urban artist Vhils has long explored the transformations of cities and societies, dismantling their visual strata. Through a process of dismantling and reconstruction-erasing and cutting into actual billboards he reveals the unseen forces and intricate dynamics concealed beneath the surface imagery of Korea. Visual artist Ana Malta turns her attention to the ways in which the elements of K-Culture move beyond fixed stereotypes, flowing in interaction with the cultural complexities of foreign contexts; she renders this process of cultural translation visible through her signature rhythmic use of color. Fellow visual artist AkaCorleone reimagines masterpieces of Korean cinema- Oldboy, Parasite, and The Handmaiden among them-with a watercolor sensibility, reflecting in his own visual idiom on how particular narratives and aesthetic symbols cross borders to shape global perception. Finally, artist and illustrator Wasted Rita captures the manner in which Korean popular culture, so closely intertwined with the online sphere, permeates everyday life in Portugal and across Europe via digital media, sharply pinpointing the complex interplay of fascination and distance embedded within that consumption.

Where the four artists' diverse perspectives intersect, this exhibition makes visible the gap between transmitted culture and received culture, along with the dynamic interplay between the two. The true driving force of K-Culture lies not in one-directional dissemination, but in the very process by which the active gaze of the outside world intervenes- willingly taking it apart and reinterpreting it. It is our hope that Exported Reality, built upon the firm cultural bond between the Republic of Korea and the Portuguese Republic, will serve as a genuine platform for mutual international exchange that affirms these dynamic possibilities of culture.
