Dear Evan Hansen

Dear Evan Hansen is a movie based on the eponymous Broadway musical that won six Tony Awards.

Evan suffers from social anxiety and writes letters to himself as a form of self-therapy. The film begins as his letter is taken by Connor, a classmate who also has the same ailment. Connor dies by suicide with the letter in his possession, and his parents erroneously deduce that Evan is their son’s best friend. To avoid disappointing them, Evan resorts to lying and sets off a chain reaction of events.

Watching Evan tell lie after lie is frustrating at times, but it is heart-warming to see him share his loneliness, understand others, and fix his mistakes. The movie is a musical, thus the best part of it is its wonderful soundtrack. I recommend “Sincerely, Me” and “You Will Be Found” among others.
