Hanok: Room for Change
Global interest in hanok (traditional Korean houses) is rising as
cultural content featuring the buildings gains popularity around the
world. These include BTS music videos, the Netflix drama Kingdom, and
entertainment television programs that use the houses as settings and
backgrounds. Various attempts have been made to grant more diverse
roles and functions to hanok to suit today’s changing ways of life.
The winter issue of Koreana, the KF’s comprehensive arts and culture
quarterly, delves into the evolution of contemporary hanok and current
shifts in hanok appreciation. The magazine also dives into the Lee
Kun-hee Collection, a treasure trove of art donated to the nation;
silversmith Sim Hyun-seok, who makes pinhole cameras; the Venerable
Sukyong, a master of traditional paper flower-making; and Korea’s
study café culture, which reflects distinct characteristics of Korean
