From ‘God Life’ to ‘Getting a Life’

Until recently, “Generation MZ,” comprising millennials and Generation Z, were swept up in the godsaeng (god+life) trend of following exemplary and diligent daily routines. Many people between the age of 20 and 40 practiced what they called a “miracle morning,” by pursuing something related to self-improvement early in the morning. They also added reading, working out, studying, and a variety of leisure activities to any gaps in their schedules.

Some claimed that their life satisfaction improved as they enjoyed reaching the small targets set in their routines. Others reported experiencing burnout from living the busy “god life” from dawn till dusk. As a result, getsaeng (get+life) is emerging as a new trend among Generation MZ. This attitude aims for a balanced life with enough rest, seeking to relax a mind and body fatigued by intense godsaeng routines.

The methods of relaxation vary greatly: some choose aroma therapy or tea therapy, while others go camping or glamping and take the time to enjoy nature. “Healing cafés,” spas, and temple stays are also favored by this generation. Through the resting and healing practice encouraged by getsaeng, people recharge their energy before returning to their usual routines.
