‘The Hunger Games’ (2012)
Director: Gary Ross
Stars:
Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth
The Hunger Games is the first movie based on the novel series
of the same name by Suzanne Collins. It is set in a nation called
Panem, which consists of the Capitol and 13 surrounding districts.
After an insurrection against the Capitol in District 13 failed, each
of the remaining 12 districts have been forced to select one boy and
one girl under the age of 19 by lottery every year. The 24 young
“tributes” must then fight to death in an event called the Hunger
Games that allows for only one surviving victor.
Evolving around protagonist Katniss Everdeen’s participation in the
Hunger Games, the movie, like most survival films, portrays the many
facets of human nature that are exposed in the struggle to survive.
In the wake of the huge success of the Korean Netflix series
Squid Game, interest in survival films is soaring, with the
Hunger Games series among the most popular in the genre. I
recommend The Hunger Games to those who are newly interested in
survival films after watching Squid Game as well as anyone who
wants to watch a movie with a solid original narrative and rich
scenes.
