The old residence at AWON Museum & Hotel in Wanju, North Jeolla Province, was built some 250 years ago and was relocated to the current site in 2006. The modern building at the entrance, which nicely blends with the traditional house, is a gallery. The residence soared in popularity after BTS shot a video and photos here for the “2019 BTS Summer Package in Korea.” It’s steeped in natural beauty, including the spectacular view of Mt. Jongnam in the background. It’s located in Oseong Hanok Village so there are lots of other things to enjoy.

JIRYE ARTS VILLAGE

Designated as Folklore Material of North Gyeongsang Province, the house was built in the 17th century as the head residence of a clan descending from Kim Bang-geol (1623-1695), a civil official of the Joseon era. When the construction of Imha Dam started in 1984, threatening to submerge the village, the clan head residence, ancestral hall, village school and other buildings were moved to a valley behind the village. Since 1989, the house has offered lodging under the name “Jirye Arts Village.” Fantastic views of Imha Lake with mist rising from the water has made this place a photo hot spot among young people.

Hyehwa 1938, some 15 minutes by foot from Changgyeong Palace in Seoul, is an urban hanok built in 1938. It was remodeled for lodging, with the basic structure preserved and a touch of modern sensibilities added through creative design elements. The architect who took charge of remodeling has operated the business since 2017. This is recognized as a rare hanok stay in the heart of Seoul. Since the entire house is available for rent by one party, it’s often used to celebrate special occasions. Another attraction in the area is the Hyehwa Community Center, the first such facility in a hanok building.
